Safety & Suitability Technologies (SST) have over 40 years experience supporting munitions clearances, undertaking environmental trials to prove installations and investigate dynamic structural performance of new systems and equipment in the air, on land and at sea.

Cranfield Aerospace (CAeS) have worked on a wide range of projects including 1,000lb requalification, defensive aid suites environment characterisation on a wide range of platforms and munitions lifing assessments on air and land based platforms. CAeS work closely with the UK’s Defence Ordnance Safety Group (DOSG), Defence General Munitions team (DGM), International Guns, Missiles and Rockets – Free Fall Weapons team (IGMR) and other key industry stakeholders toward optimum safe life for munitions.

Combined accumulated expertise with particular studies of shock, vibration and temperature, CAeS help to ensure that the latest technological developments are translated into safe and reliable systems for the most demanding use. CAeS provides a key independent role in ensuring the safety of aircraft taking off and landing at civilian and military airports both in the UK and Overseas. Similarly, CAeS helps to make helicopter landings on offshore installations a safer procedure.

CAeS provide a complete service from data gathering through to assessment:

Comprehensive data gathering trials utilising state of the art, innovative instrumentation measuring vibration, shock, pressure, acoustic and temperature data in the most demanding environments

Experimental modal analysis (GVT – Ground Vibration Testing), dynamic similarity testing and finite element modelling ensure that your latest developments are translated into safe and reliable systems.

Subject matter experts conduct in depth parametric studies using bespoke software to support the generation of tailored tests for your system. Innovative visualisation tools can assist you in understanding the environment seen by your systems.

Our environmental specialists can design a fully encompassing test programme to suit your requirements including support to live laboratory qualification trials

Small scale items can be tested using CAeS’ in house vibration test facility using bespoke test fixtures designed and manufactured by CAeS.

CAeS’ breadth of experience and independence from major defence contractors uniquely qualifies us to provide high quality, highly responsive Independent Technical Evaluation (ITE) services to MoD project teams.

Cranfield Aerospace's (CAeS) scale of operations and independence allow us to provide a rapid response to meet your requirements:

  • 40 years of experience supporting munitions clearances
  • Comprehensive data gathering trials with minimum disruption to operations
  • Optimum munition life
  • Complete service from data gathering, through particular studies & generation of tailored testing to test programme management
  • Risk reduction
  • Reduced annual cost of ownership
  • In house vibration test facility

Tailored testing has doubled the life of some munitions and the technology can be applied to any high value item.

Advanced Data Logging Technology

Cranfield Aerospace delivers customer benefits of optimum munition life with minimum disruption through the use of its Air Countermeasure Data Logger (ACDL) family.

The ACDL family of devices, developed under contract to the UK MoD (Defence General Munitions PT), are designed to help provide optimum air carriage life for equipment in operational scenarios, providing increased operational flexibility, reduced logistics footprint and reduced costs for their operators.

Although primarily designed to gather vibration and temperature data for aircraft defensive aids, their performance makes them ideally suited to a wide range of applications where high fidelity vibration and temperature data measurement solutions are required in the most demanding of environments.

These fully self-contained loggers can measure vibration and temperature data at a designated location using external sensors. Additionally, specialised instrumented flares have been developed to allow the vibration and temperature environments experienced by the flare’s energetics to be directly measured.

While the form of a Type 118 flare makes these devices ideally suited for use in flare dispensers, specialist mounting brackets allow them to be affixed to a wide range of structures, aircraft and vehicles. Additionally bespoke 218, 55mm short and 55mm long adapters allow the ACDL’s to be used in the majority of defensive aids suites.

Features:

  • Small profile loggers built into aircraft defensive aid flare cartridge
  • Whole flight recording capacity
  • Self-contained, small, lightweight and robust
  • Programmable for various data gathering scenarios
  • Certified for airborne applications (F100A)
  • Proven in the field on fast jets, helicopters, transport aircraft and Unmanned Air Systems
  • Unobtrusive and highly time-efficient means of data gathering
