The Safety and Suitability Technologies Group (SST) of Cranfield Aerospace Solutions Ltd has seen success across the globe with the most recent trials being carried out at Malmen Airbase, Linköping, Sweden. This work was carried out under contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and involved trials of the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) SAAB JAS-39 Gripen C/D, and Lockheed Martin C-130H aircraft. Each aircraft type was flown to determine the air carriage vibration and temperature environment experienced by their deployed flare fixtures.

The capture of the vibration and temperature environment experienced by external flare fixtures was successfully achieved from two load configuration sorties per aircraft. Each trialled aircraft was flown through a comprehensive range of flight conditions similar to those expected to be performed during operational use. A thorough inspection of the recorded data was completed immediately after each flight trial to verify the quality of data. The analysis of vibration and temperature data provided robust evidence to support the declaration of air carriage life (ACL) for various flare types when carried externally on these platforms. Overall, a success rate of 93% and 100% was achieved for the vibration and temperature measurements, respectively, across all aircraft platforms.

We have over 40 years experience supporting munitions clearances, undertaking environmental trials to prove installations and investigate the dynamic structural performance of new systems and equipment in the air, on land and at sea. Details here.
