Space debris mitigation policies are increasingly being mandated in order to limit or reduce the growth of the debris population in Earth orbit and reduce risks to satellites. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions Limited (CAeS) are therefore delighted to be able to announce the availability of the Cranfield De-Orbiting Device (CDOD). The CDOD is a drag augmentation system that utilises an “air brake” sail for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to increase drag and so more rapidly de-orbit the satellite, to burn up in the atmosphere. The system is currently designed to work on small satellites (< 1000 kg) and orbits of up to 800 km.

We already have what we believe are the only two examples of this type of device in orbit, with a third in production for a 2017 launch.

The key attributes of the CDOD are; Low-cost, Simple (both design and interfaces to satellite), Safe, Reliable (but safety takes priority), Low Mass ≤ propellant mass to deorbit, minimal impact on host satellite, easily testable in 1-g, no additional debris production, tolerates some failures/degradation of host satellite.
