Runway Friction Surveys and Testing
We are the most experienced operator of friction survey trials in the United Kingdom, carrying out a key role for the safety of aircraft taking off and landing at many of the UK's civilian and military airports. Similarly, our work helps to make helicopter landings on oil platforms a much safer procedure.
Friction testing is essential to conform to regulations and contributes to the safe operation of a helideck or runway.
The equipment used fully conforms to JSP554 and UK CAA CAP 683 requirements.
Friction values vary according to wetness. Our equipment carries a water supply to provide a constant degree of wetness beneath the measuring wheel.
Maintenance schedules are assisted by regular friction testing which enable comparisons to be made year-by-year.
A friction contour map of each runway is produced, showing areas that may need attention to restore friction values.
CAe currently supports Scott Wilson, Atkins & TPS Consult as part of the Defence Estates contract for friction surveys on UK Military runways, as well as some overseas.
Helideck Friction Tests
Regular helideck friction assessments can eliminate the need for net coverings, which are otherwise required in high wind and slippery conditions. These nets give 'shocking' effect on helicopter wheels and are generally unpopular with flight crews for operational safety reasons. They can also cause operational problems with personnel tripping, restricting the use of wheeled equipment near the helicopter and obscuring deck markings at some approach angles. If the helideck can be operated safely without the use of nets, there are clear advantages.
Our staff are fully certified for working on offshore platforms.
UK helidecks that are friction tested to UK CAA CAP 437 Standards can carry out helicopter operations without fitting a helicopter landing net.
